Obituary

Merle J. Short, 76, of Archbold, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at the Fulton County Health Center.

Merle was born on September 7, 1940, near Archbold, to Sylvan R. and Pluma (Yoder) Short.  He grew up on the family farm with siblings Don and Carol.  Following his father's death, Merle took over the farm at age 16.  He married Charlene Nafziger on February 18, 1961 and they were blessed with two sons.  Merle continued farming for 39/40 years, and then worked at Pro-Mow in Fort Wayne, IN, for his nephew, Doug Short, where he was able to work alongside his brother Don.

Merle was an active member of Zion Mennonite Church, and served as a Director of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank for over 20 years.  After retirement he volunteered at Care and Share Thrift Store.  Merle enjoyed people, especially his family, and loved time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlene, sons Gary (Alice) of Bedford, TX, Tim (Missy) of Wadsworth, OH, grandchildren Marianne and Rose Short, Crystal (Morne) Coetzer, Rachel Andrews, Shane Andrews, great-granddaughter Raegan Alexa Coetzer, and sister-in-law Donna Short of Fort Wayne, IN.

He was preceded in death by his brother Don Short and sister and brother-in-law Carol and Marlin King.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM at Zion Mennonite Church with Pastor Jessica Schrock-Ringenberg officiating.  Interment will precede in the Lockport Cemetery.  Friends may call at Zion Mennonite Church from 3-8 PM on Monday.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be given to Mennonite Central Committee, Sunshine Children's Home or Fish Pantry.
