Lucella “Lu"
Mae (Hunt) Wolf
Apr 2, 1929 — Sep 13, 2021
Lucella "Lu" Mae (Hunt) Wolf passed away, with her family by her side, in Melbourne Florida on September 13, 2021 with hospice care. She was born on April 2, 1929 to Leo and Ethel (Quick) Hunt in South Haven, Michigan. She grew up on a fruit farm where she and her seven siblings helped pick fruit in the orchards. She attended and graduated from South Haven High School, in 1947. A few years later, she met Carrol Wolf when they were both employed at the Morris's Five & Dime Store. They married on July 28, 1951 and enjoyed 62 years of marriage.
After Carrol's discharge from the Air Force they settled in Archbold, Ohio. They had three daughters, Linda, Judy,, and Robin. Lu stayed home and took in ironing and did some babysitting for a few years and then worked in retail at The City Drug and the F&M Bank until her retirement. She enjoyed teaching her daughters to cook and sew, they are grateful for that to this day. She was always happiest when spending time with her family and that got even more important to her when she became Grandma Lu. She would read to, and play games with her grandchildren as babies, but loved when they were old enough to play crazy 8's, Old Maid, and Candy Land. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies and the kids and grandkids loved when they found a bag that she had stashed in the freezer.
After retirement, Lu and Carrol did a lot of traveling across the U.S. and spent extended time in Florida and Arizona, but were always anxious to get back to their Ohio family. The holidays were her happiest times, when we would gather and graze together around her dining room table and she could give everyone a few new dish scrubbies that she had made from nylon netting. She greeted the next generation of great-grandchildren with equal happiness and they called her Grandma Great. They also learned to check the freezer for her cookies.
Lu was a great wife and caregiver to Carrol until his passing in 2013. She was slowing down and was lonely some of the time and in 2016 decided to move to an assisted living community in Melbourne Florida, close to her youngest daughter and family. She easily made friends at Town Square Assisted Living and played BINGO and participated in all the exercise classes. Whenever there was music she was likely to dance. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and passed her love for them down through her daughters to her great-grandchildren. She put her last puzzle together less than three weeks ago. She got dressed up every day and completed her outfit with matching necklace and earrings. She never left her room without her lipstick on and her purse on her arm. One of her greatest accomplishments later in life was to have her cookies featured at a local Melbourne restaurant as "Grandma Lu's Chocolate Chip Cookies."
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carrol, a sister Barbara Ridley, and two brothers, Cecil "Bud" Hunt and Charlie Hunt.
Lu is survived by her daughters, Linda (Lee) Short of Port Clinton, Ohio, Judy (Paul) Wyse of The Villages, Florida, and Robin (Matt) Kerr of Melbourne, Florida. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Heather (Greg) Ravas, Libby (Jonathan Bohner) Beck, Carly (Tom) Ansel, Logan (John LePelley) Short, Kelsy Wyse, Tucker Beck, Kenny (Whitney) Wyse, Hayley (Jesse) Lim, and Clay Kerr (Ayla), her seven great-grand children Ezekiel Beck, Isaac Ravas, Gabriel Richer, Mara Ansel, Greta Ansel, Ava Ansel, and Willow Wyse, her sisters, Dorothy Rithmel and Carolyn Pettis, brothers Don Hunt and Allen Hunt and sister-in-law Donna Crockett.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 23, at 2 PM at the Archbold United Methodist Church. Private burial will be in the Archbold Cemetery. Friends may call at Short Funeral Home in Archbold from 6-8 PM on Wednesday. The family suggests that memorials be given to the Young Artist Fund or Donor's choice.
