Obituary

Joan Sommer, 87, of Archbold, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, July 26, 2014 with family at her side. She was born in Bluffton, Ohio on March 29, 1927 to Roy Hauenstein and Azelda (Keifer) Hauenstein. She was a 1945 graduate of Pandora High School, Pandora, OH and attended Bowling Green State University. On November 3, 1946 she married Clyde Sommer at St. John's Evangelical & Reformed Church in Bluffton, Ohio. Joan's two passions were working with children and spending time with her family. She took an active role offering advice and wisdom to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an ardent supporter of all their life's endeavors - their biggest fan. Joan's favorite pastime and hobby was landscaping. Her immaculate flower beds were a joy to see. She and her husband, Clyde, spent endless hours planting trees, flowers and shrubs beautifying their home. For several years Joan enjoyed the challenges and rewards of working with students in the Archbold School system. Joan worked first as a teacher's aide in the Elmira Elementary School and then as a secretary in both the Archbold Elementary and Ridgeville Middle Schools. She often remarked on being greeted by former students when out in public and felt blessed to have known them. Joan also worked for the Village of Archbold for several years. She was an active member of St. John's Christian Church in Archbold. She served on the Facility Committee for several years, participated in numerous ladies groups and volunteered on countless occasions. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Clyde Sommer; children, Connie (Jeff) Smith, Angola, IN, David (Jayne) Sommer, Springfield, VT and Kathy (Randy)Layton, Archbold, OH. She felt blessed to have six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren to love and enjoy. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her grandson D.J. Sommer, sister Shirley (Hauenstein) Slabaugh and brother, John Hauenstein. Services will held at Saint John's Christian Church in Archbold on Wednesday at 11:30 A.M., with visitation beginning at 10 A.M. in the Chapel, followed by the funeral service in the main church.
