Obituary

Irene Miller, age 91 years, of Wauseon, Ohio, passed away peacefully June 17, 2015 at Fulton Manor, Wauseon. She was born August 10, 1923, in Leo, IN to Peter Jr. and Martha (Yoder) Liechty. She married Mahlon Edward Miller on February 21, 1943. She was a charter member of North Clinton Mennonite Church. Irene accepted Christ as her personal Savior in 1936 and was baptized at Leo Mennonite Church, Leo, IN. Irene was always involved in the businesses she and Mahlon had over the years. Though she never finished high school, she continued learning through the years and took a typing class so she could better serve in their businesses as a secretary and bookkeeper. She taught herself to play guitar and yodel by listening to the radio. From 1986-2008, winters were spent in their Florida home. Since December 2009, she was a resident at Fulton Manor, Wauseon. Irene always enjoyed working outdoors, preferring to "relax" in her garden and flowerbeds than doing inside work. Many times she was still working in her flowerbeds after the sun went down. She taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School many years. One Sunday after class, a child told her parents she "learned to sit" when asked what she had learned. Evidently the little ones were full of energy that morning. For many years, she was the alto in a ladies' trio at North Clinton. She also served in the Sunshine Children's Auxiliary, Gideon's International Auxiliary, and was a quilter at Sauder Village. Irene always enjoyed having area churches use Lake Irene for baptisms and picnics. She and Mahlon enjoyed traveling. They visited all the states in the United States (except Alabama, Alaska and South Dakota) and many countries in the worlda special trip being to the Holy Land and following one of Paul's missionary journeys. After one Mennonite World Conference, they extended their travels by going around the world. They traveled twice to Mississippi to work with a MDS (Mennonite Disaster Service) project. They interrupted one trip to fly home from Texas to attend the baptism services of two of their grandchildren. Afterwards they flew back and continued their planned trip. They also hosted the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) canning project in their barn for 3-4 years and housed the young men traveling with the canner. Irene is survived by daughter, Sharon (Vernon) Evers, son Edward (Lila) Miller, daughters Kathleen (Dave) Grieser and Bev Miller, all of Wauseon, OH, seven grandchildren and their six spouses, twelve great-grandchildren, one brother Herbert (Geri) Liechty, of Goshen, IN, sister Marilyn (Willard) Grieser, of Archbold, OH and brother-in-law, Melvin Evers of Wauseon, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brother Dale Liechty, sister Luella King Aeschliman and brother Clifford Liechty. Visitation will be held at North Clinton Mennonite Church, Wauseon on June 21 from 2-8 p.m. The Memorial Service, also to be held at North Clinton Mennonite Church, will be held on June 22 at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. on June 22. Pastor Brad Faler will officiate. Memorials may be given to North Clinton Mennonite Church, Sunshine Foundation, Inc., or donor's choice. Interment in Pettisville Cemetery.
