Obituary

On January 17th, 2024, at the age of 89 Doris Darlene Gnagey passed away at Springs Rehab Center in Murrieta, CA from complications after a fall caused by a cerebral vascular event at her home in Temecula, CA.  After two weeks of rehab she could not regain strength and declined rapidly.

Doris was born on September 3rd, 1934, on the family farm in Kalona, IA to Howard and Barbara (Yoder) Gnagey.  She was the middle child of 5, two older brothers and a younger sister and brother. She grew up on the farm and attended a local schoolhouse and then graduated from Iowa Mennonite School.  Later, she graduated from Goshen College, a one-year course. After that Doris worked as a bookkeeper at a local car dealership in her hometown and for her church back in Indiana.

In October 1964 Doris and her sister Mary moved out west to Orange CA with a small U-Haul trailer behind her Plymouth.  They stayed with friends until they found jobs and an apartment. After working some odd jobs, in April 1965 she began working in the accounting department at Allstate Insurance and retired in 1999 with 34 years.

In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, flower arrangements, and collecting teddy bears and dolls.  A good roller coaster ride always made her happy and she made some amazing desserts (Buckeye candies and Dirt pudding).  She doted on all her nieces and nephews and their children even more so. She loved holidays and always went over the top at Christmas time with her elaborate wrapping jobs with gorgeous bows. She loved being around her family.

After retirement Doris traveled all over the world.  She traveled to many places in the USA, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Her favorite place was "The Wave" in Utah and she visited it 3 times! She traveled in tour groups and made a lot of friends and had many life experiences. In September 2009 she suffered from a stroke which prevented her from traveling long distances.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, infant sister 1931, brother C. Robert Gnagey 1994, brother Allen D. Gnagey 2011, and nephew Neil Rupp 2021.

Doris is survived by her sister Mary (Gnagey) Potter and husband Jon, Archbold OH and a brother James Gnagey and wife Jane of Kenosha WI, Daughter Sharla Phelps and husband Scott of Phoenix, AZ, Nephews and Nieces, Mike Potter and wife Kristen of Temecula, CA, Keith Gnagey and wife Linda of Harrisonburg, VA.
