Carol S. Hackett, aged 89, died peacefully on September 5, 2015, at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. She was born August 12, 1926 in Wauseon, Ohio to Harry E. and Carolyn (DeFord) Schwall. She married her high school sweetheart, Hal C. Hackett, on September 6, 1947 and they celebrated 61 years together. A 1944 graduate of Wauseon High School, she received her BSc in Education from Ohio State University in 1948, and taught school while her husband finished his degree in Dental Surgery. In the years of raising five children, she and Hal went on various missions to Latin America, and summered at Devil's Lake, MI. While representing the Archbold United Methodist Church, it was during her summer ministry to migrant families who came from Texas and Mexico to work in NW Ohio, that Carol fully realized the need to learn Spanish in order to be a more effective witness for the Lord Jesus Christ. Beginning her studies in Spanish at age 45 at Defiance College, she continued her studies at Bowling Green State University receiving her Masters in the History and Literature of Spain. Carol then taught Spanish at Defiance College and also in the Archbold Area Schools, and led groups of students from her Spanish classes on tours of Spain and Mexico. Upon her husband's retirement, the two traveled extensively throughout the world, including visiting Israel 14 times. Carol and Hal had a great heart for Israel and God's purpose for the nation. They received great enjoyment in their many years in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, winter skiing with their children and grandchildren and participating in the summer activities. These happy times came to an abrupt end upon Hal's passing in 2008, and left Carol grieving in the emptiness of her home. Gradually, the Holy Spirit of God began to minister to her and encouraged her heart and mind. Her book, "Go Girl Go" shares the story of her loss, grief and the challenges that she overcame through God's sustaining love. She found purpose and focus beyond herself in helping others discover the abundant life that Jesus Christ offers to all. In her love and honor of family, Carol, along with her brother, DeFord Schwall, and sister, Mary Schwall Dickerson Frantz, built a chapel in memory of their parents at the Wauseon Cemetery on Route 2. Her central focus was celebrating Jesus Christ and the Lost Lamb, depicting the powerful, gentle and forgiving love that God has for each of us. As He does with the lamb, Jesus lovingly holds us in His mighty arms taking care of us for all eternity. Carol S. Hackett lived life to the fullest, passionate in all she did, persevering and learning all her life. A prolific writer, she was a true scholar and teacher with a generous heart, and will be greatly missed.
