Obituary

Bernard J. Haas, recently of Archbold OH; educator; WWII veteran; loving husband of Janice; parent, brother, grandparent, and great-grandparent; died on 6 September 2016.  He was one week short of his 94th birthday.

Born and raised on a small farm in Wood County, Bernie met his bride-to-be Janice Lehr, of Arlington OH, on a blind date on the eve of his Army induction.  Bernie was deployed to the WWII European theater, and was wounded in Germany.  He and Janice developed a romance by military mail throughout his tour of duty, and were married soon after he returned to civilian life.  Their marriage and the two children that followed were at the heart of his ensuing life.  (They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary).

He attended Bowling Green State University on the GI bill, to pursue a career in education.  Bernie taught high school chemistry and physics in Morenci and Napoleon, and served as a curriculum supervisor for the Sandusky County schools.  After retirement he became even more active in church and community activities.

Bernie was always active in the church:  St. Paul Methodist Church in Napoleon, Hayes Memorial United Methodist Church in Fremont, and Archbold United Methodist Church.  He and Janice enjoyed camping, traveled across much of America, and tended flower and vegetable gardens when they were home.

They moved to a retirement community in Archbold in 1995, and spent many happy years helping at the Commons, attending pot-lucks with their neighbors, playing cards with their friends, and traveling to dote on their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He will be missed.

Services will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at the Fairlawn Chapel with Rev. James Nathan officiating.  Interment will be at 2:30 PM on Saturday at the Milton Township Cemetery at Custar.  Friends may call at Fairlawn Chapel from 3-5 PM on Friday and 9-11 AM on Saturday.
